Alex DeSpain

Creating patterns, graphics for apparel, textile design, logos, maps, book illustrations, icons, posters, and working on ad campaigns are some of my favorite projects.

I studied graphic design at Portland State University and at The Art Institue of Dallas. My internships have included working at a letterpress, at an art gallery as an assistant, and studying under an art director at a weekly newspaper.

I've had the pleasure of creating illustrations for Intel, Lush Cosmetics, Chacos, Incase, Sasquatch Books, eBay, Sock It To Me, Scout Books, Simple, Badge Bomb, Valley Cruise Press, Bacardi, Widmer Brother Brewing, Studio Mega, Thinktopia, Mirai, Teva, PSU, Northwest Community Credit Union, The Portland Mercury, Willamette Week, Instrument, Ginza Magazine, Atlas Quarterly, Bookblock, Design Week Portland, Modern Burlap, True Parent Magazine, KBOO Radio, Amadeus Magazine, among others.

My work is memorable with a unique human quality to it. Let's work together!

Working with Alex is super easy. He makes my job way fun.
— Kathleen Marie | Art Director at The Portland Mercury
Alex brings super positive vibes, hustle, and heart to any collaboration. But, most importantly, he brings his unique voice and view of the world.
— Chris Lael Larson | Art Director at Instrument
Alex has a way of taking disparate source material and fashioning it into a cohesive body of work. His illustrations for our program were the centerpiece of our marketing in 2016 and had a huge impact on the interest we garnered from our audience. He’s an absolute pleasure to work with.
— Tsilli Pines | Director of Design Week Portland
Alex is a dream collaborator! Working with him on the Handy Tips for Happy Plants Scout Book was easy and pleasant. He’s timely, communicative, and delivers smart ideas and terrific graphics!
— Chlöe Miller | Partnerships Coordinator at Scout Books
Alex is an unreal illustrator, super lovely human,
and has a really unique style.
— Frankie Ratford | Director of The Design Kids
I have had the pleasure of working with Alex on multiple projects the past few years. Not only is Alex a very talented illustrator, but he is also very organized, which as an account/project manager, I find extremely beneficial. Alex attends meetings on time, delivers work on time, and is very clear on what his work on a project will entail when putting together a statement of work. I recommend Alex to anyone needing some sort of design.
You won’t be disappointed!
— Caroline Quiring | Project & Account Manager of Manifesto Agency
When we first stumbled upon Alex’s work, we were inspired and motivated to find a way to tap into his talent. He was super easy to work with, listened to our perspective, and delivered incredible artwork.
— Trent Mitchell | Creative Director of Studio Mega
